Spencer B. Gay, MD
APDR President 2005-2006

Spencer Gay 3-11

The APDR year of 2005-06 began with the AUR meeting where the Competencies were just beginning to be implemented and evaluated in residencies. The meeting also featured sessions on learner-centered education - the keynote address was given by Geoffrey Norman. He emphasized the concept that effective learning takes place in context and that getting lots of repetitions while practicing skills learned at the view box is key to mastery.

Later in 2005, a discussion took place at the ACR Intersociety Conference that was to be the beginning of the restructuring of the radiology residency and the written/oral exams. I gave a presentation on the history of the residency in radiology along with the effects of various changes in the overall plan. At the same time, the ABR began stressing the importance of Maintenance of Certification in the future, particularly with time-limited certificates. MOC required the creation of a series of interactive Self – Assessment Modules (SAMS) to assess competency.

APDR Achievement Award - Coralie Shaw, MD

Coralie Shaw is a role model for what a dedicated educator and fearless advocate can accomplish for the specialty of radiology. As a charter member, past president, and stalwart committee chair of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology, her many achievements have advanced the society and served to improve education in radiology.

Coralie earned her MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and then completed her internship at Dartmouth/Hitchcock Hospital and her residency in radiology at Lahey Clinic before becoming a staff member at Lahey. Luckily for academic radiology, she met her high school sweatheart, Bill Quirk, at their 20th reunion and moved to Dallas to join Bill. After being told she would not get a job in private practice because she was not a "native son," she began an academic career doing chest radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Health Center at Dallas.
